Build a Travel Charging Kit That Works at Your Desk, Too

By Robert Peterson

A charging kit can earn its place twice: on your desk and in your travel bag. Pair a Techsmarter USB-C wall or desktop charger with a portable battery pack, then keep the right cables with the devices they serve. The result is a familiar setup you can use at home and take with you.

Draw the charging route

Write down the route from the outlet to each device. A laptop might connect directly to a USB-C adapter, while a phone uses a powered pad. Your power bank also needs an input connection so it is ready when you leave the room.

Give the laptop the supported high-output USB-C connection, then assign the remaining devices to suitable ports or wireless surfaces. Account for the charger’s shared-output arrangement so your priority device has the power it needs.

Separate desk convenience from mobile reserve

A powered charging pad can make repeated phone placement convenient at a desk, but it does not store energy for a walk between meetings. A power bank provides reserve, but it still needs to be recharged.

The MagBoost pad with wall charger and TSBar 20,000mAh 65W illustrate those different roles. Choose either or both according to your devices, carrying preferences and access to outlets.

Check the cables before the trip

Use the correct connectors and power capability for each route. Keep the laptop cable with the laptop charging equipment so it is not confused with a less capable spare. Check whether your case or bag arrangement puts strain on a connection.

If you intend to use a hub or keyboard charging port, test that route specifically. A direct connection working correctly does not prove that every accessory inserted between the source and device passes the same power.

Give priority devices the power they need

Read the allocation table for a multiport adapter, where available. Adding up individual port maxima can overstate what the charger supplies simultaneously. If the required information is missing, ask about the combination before depending on it.

Likewise, only use a power bank to recharge itself and supply another device at the same time if the exact model supports that arrangement. Check its operating limits rather than assuming every bank offers pass-through charging.

Run a packing rehearsal

  1. Connect the devices you expect to charge together.
  2. Check that each device reports charging.
  3. Confirm the laptop behaves as needed under your normal workload.
  4. Disconnect and pack the complete kit, including its input cables.
  5. Keep a list of included components for the return journey.

For international travel, pair the equipment with the destination’s plug type and supported electrical ratings. Our wall charger guide and desktop station guide help organize the Techsmarter portion of the kit.

*Illustrative estimates use a 5,000mAh phone battery at 3.85V, power-bank cells at 3.7V and an assumed 75% energy transfer: bank mAh × 3.7 ÷ 1,000 × 0.75 ÷ 19.25. Recharge counts vary with phone, charging method and use; wireless charging can yield fewer charges. A decimal includes a partial recharge.

Use a cable and charging mode supported by your device. Power is shared when several outputs are in use. A dash means the one-hour phone-charging feature is unspecified for that model.

Frequently asked questions

Can a powered pad replace a portable battery?

No. A pad needs an external power source, while a battery pack stores energy for later use.

Can I add port wattages to find total output?

Not reliably. Use the manufacturer’s stated simultaneous-output limits.

Should I test all devices together before traveling?

Yes. Test the combination you intend to use, including cables and any hubs or other accessories.

Useful at your desk, ready for the next trip

Choose a TSPort charger for supported devices at an outlet and a TSBar PPS power bank for laptop and compatible-phone fast charging on the move. Add MagBoost when magnetic phone convenience fits your routine. Select each item for a clear job, so the same equipment stays useful across more of your day.
